The above pic, although looks like a moth or butterfly, is actually an owl fly. As you can see it is a truly interesting insect.
Please credit ‘Crouching dragon’ if you use photos 👍
Above: This is a ‘hummingbird hawkmoth’, they are extremely fast and don’t hang around for long, you will hardly ever find them landed…but alas, here below is one landed, all be it not a particularly good photo and not the best back drop😜
They are so named, because they feed on the wing in the same way as a humming bird. I love the hawkmoths because they are mostly amazing looking, as are their Caterpillars. I am pleased with the photo of the one in flight, because as previously mentioned my camera is nothing special and I know nothing about photography 😁
Above: This is a ‘Small Skipper’, though, they are all small butterflies, but as you can see they have big eyes. They are more often a beautiful chestnut/copper kind of colour. Like this…
Above: This is possibly a ‘Large Skipper ‘
The Skippers are rarely landed with open wings, so you will usually only see the top wings in flight.
Above: This is a ‘Tiger Moth’, it just looks so fabulous on that pansy.
Above: This is a ‘Duke of Burgundy Fritillary ‘
Above: This is a ‘Langs Short tailed Blue’ the top wings on blues often range from hues of beautiful lilacy- blue …hence the name, however, there are some that are brown on top, particularly females, or a mixture of brown and blue hues. They are all small butterflies…like thumb nail small. They all have a very interesting under wing that contrasts greatly with their top or upper wings.
So here is a photo of the top wings of a blue
Above: ‘Chapman’s Blue’…the female of which is very brown on the top wings.
Above: ‘Small Blue’ it is a male, the female has less or paler blue around the body.
Above: Locusts mating. Awesome creatures, they were watching me watching them. They were moving around the stalk to try to hide from me. As I moved around to get a good focus so did they. I was rather persistent, and in the end they were pleading with me to go away and give them some privacy 😜 ….. look at their faces🤗
