The Ladybird lifecycle in Photos

Ladybugs (U.S) or Ladybirds are beautiful beatles. There are literally hundreds of different varieties.

Apologies…I do not have a photo of eggs, and so we begin with the larva…

Above: this is a ladybird larva.

Above: this is the pupa stage, where the larva has curled up and begun metamorphosis. This process is incredibly quick, taking no longer than 2 weeks, depending on the temperature …

Above: the ladybird emerges from its chrysalis a dull under developed colour (notice the other insect intruding on the photo 🤭) but with time will become the insect we are all familiar with…

Above: and then it begins again 😉😁

Ladybird info…

Entomologists prefer the name ‘Ladybird’ since the insect is apparently not a true ‘bug‘. Not wishing to agrivate entomologists, since they are an extremely valuable asset to the world and I am truly in awe of them 🤗 however, Ladybirds are also not true ‘birds’…I digress, so not wishing to turn this post into a controversial piece on language, let us begin…

The name ‘Ladybird ‘ originated in Britain from the insect been known as ‘Our Lady’s bird’. ‘Mary/Our Lady’ was often depicted wearing a red cloak, the spots of the ‘Seven spot ladybird’ were said to represent or symbolize her 7 Joys and 7 sorrows.

The female ladybird will deposit clusters of elongated/oval eggs usually yellow in colour, and generally between 10-50. During one season a single female can deposit up to 1000 eggs.
